Let the Blog wars begin!   1 comment

For days I was at a loss thinking about what topic to discuss. I had a list of around 10 topics, ranging from “local xampp wordpress/drupal XP install” to generating secure passwords. But as luck would have it I decided to write about this, Matt Mulenweg’s reaction to SixApart’s Anil Dash’s WP2.5 upgrade guide.

Personally I’m with Matt. If Anil wants to sell MT, then he shouldn’t do so by saying bad things about a competing product. To me Anil/MT sounded desperate over WP’s share of the blogging world. WP is 100% opensource as Matt said. You can’t get any better than that. And I understand Matt’s reaction to it too. WP is his baby. You don’t just stand there while somebody throws stones at your kid.

  1. Hi, I just wanted to clarify — I never threw any stones, and I didn’t say anything bad about WP. I pointed out what Movable Type does uniquely well, and in a tone that was respectful, factual, and free of charged words like “betrayal” and other ones that Matt used. Movable Type, like WordPress, is open source.

I’d invite you to take another look at the words we wrote, and read them not from the mindset of “picking sides”, but from the standpoint of seeing what encourages competition and advancement in blogging, and see if you don’t get a slightly different feel for the conversation.

I would disagree that WP is Matt’s baby — I think it’s the work of a community of bloggers, just as Movable Type is. But Matt and Automattic have tens of millions of dollars in the bank, a significant staff, and a large community. In fact, Automattic’s raised far more money than Six Apart ever has. Given that context, anything that encourages them to compete on features, functionality, and capabilities for both platforms seems like what’s best for the blogosphere as a whole, don’t you think?

    Anil
