Backing up your Blogger Blog   no comments

I used to maintain a blog in Google’s Blogger. But eversince I discovered how fun Wordpress can be I have since then transfered. But blogger is a neat blogging app that’s has a no-frills setup that even your grandmother can do. For this reason alone blogger is still quite popular for the common internet-junkie.

One drawback about Blogger is that you don’t have control of its database. It just presents you with a cute web-based GUI and that’s all you will get. And because blogging in Blogger is quite easy, you’ll be surprised that you have more than a hundred posts!

So you want to back all that up in your hardrive so you’d get that warm and cozy feeling that even if Blogger goes down (however remote that is) and takes your blog with you, you still have all your posts, pictures, rants saved up in your hardrive.

So how do you backup Blogger?

Before I used a neat little app called fittingly Blogger Backup. It’s nice app, it saves your posts into separate xml files and can login to multiple blogger blogs for easy backup. The drawback of this app is that it doesn’t save your images which really sucks for those travel bloggers out there.

Enter Firefox and it’s army of plugins. Firefox has this nice plugin called ScrapBook. ScrapBook will save webpages in it’s original form in your harddrive for offline viewing. Quite perfect for backing up Blogger!

So all you do is install ScrapBook in Firefox, visit your Blogger Blog, go to your blog’s Archive section and pick a month to back up, say April 2008. So this displays all your posts for the month of April 2008. Select ScrapBook from the Firefox menubar and select “Capture page”. Wait for it to show a notice that the page is saved and that’s it! The whole April 2008 section of your blogger is now backed up neatly in your Firefox Application folder. For Windows XP users, this folder resides in

C:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\user.default\ScrapBook\data

Go to that directory and you’ll see folders where you have backed up your blog. Do this for every month of your blog to back it up completely.

Enjoy!
